pErSoNaLiZe Your Carpet Deodorizer!

Have you ever tried to remove pet smells and other odors from your rugs and carpets, only to find that the scents of the expensive rug and carpet deodorizers you found at the store to be too flowery, too perfumey or just plain strange and made you wish that the pet scent was back because that was better than what you put on it to improve it? Well, that's me! I had to find a better way - with much better scents!

My simple solution was to purchase a large box (4 lb.) of baking soda (which I found in the laundry section of my local grocery store, market or mega-mart), and my favorite scented oil or home spray (not an aerosol spray but a liquid spray with a removable cap that you can put a dropper in to remove the oil or liquid) from a craft store, mega-mart, country store or on-line supplier. I found a large, empty spice container with holes in the top and a snap lid which would work perfect for sprinkling! If you don't have a large, empty spice container, you can also use a plastic storage container with a snap-on lid. I just removed the lid of the storage container and poked holes into the top with an ice pick in an area measuring about 2 inches by 2 inches. I then covered the hole area with a piece of duct tape (which can be found in many sweet colors and designs now!) as a movable cap to seal the top to prevent spillage of your deodorizer and inhibit scent release.

In a medium to large mixing bowl, I mixed together with a wire whisk, 2 cups of baking soda and about 30 droplets (more or less depending upon your preference as to strength of the scent) of the scented oil until well combined. I spooned my mixture into my container and the next time I wanted to improve the scent of my home and carpet and rugs, I popped open the lid or pulled back the tape of my container and sprinkled my home-made rug deodorizer onto my carpet and rugs, allowed it to sit for up to an hour, swept up my carpets and enjoyed my economical, pErSoNaLiZeD, scented rug and carpet deodorizer!

Hey, save yourself some money, and give it a try. You'll find that you will enjoy your personal scents far better than anything that is pre-made and found at the store.

As a pet owner, I can appreciate the problem of getting rid of lingering pet odors, and I too dislike the strong scents of commercial products. I've used baking soda, but your idea of adding some scented oil to personalize your carpet deodorizer is great!
